What homeowners should know

A bowing block wall is usually being pushed inward by soil pressure and water outside the foundation. Steel braces anchored to the floor and the framing hold the wall and stop it from moving further, and with the outside pressure managed they can sometimes recover a little of the movement over time.

Mortar joints matter too. As mortar deteriorates from freeze-thaw cycles and water, the masonry loses strength and lets in more water, which speeds up the damage. Tuckpointing replaces the failed mortar so the wall carries load and sheds water the way it was built to. Repairing the bracing and the mortar together lasts longer than fixing either one alone.
