Project summary

A relatively new home just outside Moline, Illinois had water seeping in along the cove joint. Instead of installing an entirely new system, Behncke Construction corrected the existing waterproofing with targeted adjustments — solving the problem while saving the homeowner a significant amount of money.

What we did

The crew evaluated the home’s existing waterproofing system and made targeted adjustments to stop the seepage at the cove joint, rather than tearing out and replacing what was already in place.

What homeowners should know

The cove joint — where the basement floor meets the foundation wall — is one of the most common places for water to appear. It is usually a sign of hydrostatic pressure pushing water up from below rather than a crack in the wall, so the right fix relieves that pressure instead of simply coating over it. In many cases the most effective long-term solution is an interior drain-tile and sump system, but not every situation needs the full system — sometimes, as here, an existing setup can be adjusted. Behncke starts by diagnosing the source: grading, drainage and how water is managed around the home, because a wet basement is usually a water-management problem before it’s a structural one.
