  • Basement Water Overview

Basement water intrusion is one of the most common problems we see in Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, Rock Island, and throughout the Quad Cities. Water entering through basement walls, floor cracks, cove joints, leaking mortar joints, failing drain tile systems, or under sill plates can lead to mold growth, musty odors, structural deterioration, damaged drywall, and foundation movement if left untreated.
In many cases, basement water intrusion repair costs in the Quad Cities range from a few hundred dollars for simple grading or crack sealing repairs to $2,000–$8,000+ for interior drain tile systems, sump systems, exterior waterproofing, or more extensive structural and drainage corrections.
At Behncke Construction, we identify the true source of basement water intrusion before recommending repairs because every foundation leak is different. Some basements only need grading improvements or localized crack repair, while others require drainage correction, structural repair, foundation waterproofing, or drain tile replacement to permanently control water intrusion. The important thing to remember is, this is not a one "SYSTEM" fits all. A company that can accuratly assess why your basement is leaking and provide a tartgeted repair can save you thousands.
  • How does water get into your home?

If you have a water problem, we find that its usually coming from one of three places.
Under your sill plate - You might find water dripping down from the top of your wall. This is one of the most basic repairs where most of the time is simply involves regrading outside your foundation wall so water flows away from the problematic area.
Through the wall - This is the second place we look for water intrusion. There can be cracks in the wall, leaking mortar joints, rusty form ties or even holes. Depending on what type of foundation you have, we determine if you need to dig the particular area out or install a drain tile system. Each foundation is a case by case situation.
Below the slab - The third location is from below the slab. Excess water pressure builds up from below the slab pushing water through cracks and voids in the slab and along the foundation wall. The remedy to this problem usually involves a sump pump or a drain tile system.
Don’t delay any longer if you are concerned about water damage in your basement or crawlspace. Contact us for an appointment. We serve: Davenport, Bettendorf, Moline, East Moline, Rock Island, Blue Grass, Eldridge of the Quad Cities.

  • Why Water Enters Basement Walls

Water intrusion in basements is a common issue for homes throughout Davenport and the surrounding Quad Cities area. When heavy rain or melting snow saturates the soil around a foundation, hydrostatic pressure builds against basement walls. This pressure forces moisture through small cracks, mortar joints, and porous concrete surfaces.
Many homes in the region were built decades ago, and over time the original waterproofing systems may begin to fail. Drain tile systems can clog, grading around the home may settle, or exterior drainage may no longer direct water away from the structure properly.
Clay soils common throughout eastern Iowa and western Illinois also contribute to basement moisture problems. These soils expand when wet and shrink when dry, placing pressure against foundation walls and allowing water to find pathways into the basement.
Even small foundation cracks can allow significant moisture to enter over time, especially during periods of heavy rainfall.

    Signs of Basement Water Problems

Homeowners often notice several warning signs before serious water damage occurs. Damp spots on basement walls, musty odors, or peeling paint can indicate that moisture is entering the structure.

    Other common signs include:
    • water stains on basement walls
    • small puddles forming after heavy rain
    • white powdery residue on masonry (efflorescence)
    • cracks forming in concrete or block walls
    • mold or mildew growth in basement areas
Ignoring these symptoms can allow the problem to worsen over time. Moisture intrusion can weaken structural materials and create conditions that encourage mold growth and interior damage.

How We Repair Basement Water Intrusion

At Behncke Construction, we identify the root cause of water intrusion before recommending a repair solution. In many cases, the issue can be addressed by improving exterior drainage and reducing the pressure of water against the foundation walls.

Our team may recommend solutions such as improving grading around the home, installing proper drainage, sealing foundation cracks, or repairing damaged masonry walls.
Because every property is different, we evaluate the foundation, surrounding soil conditions, and existing drainage systems before determining the best approach.
Our goal is always to stop the source of water intrusion rather than simply treating the symptom.
  • Basement Waterproofing and Drainage Solutions

Proper drainage is one of the most effective ways to protect a basement from future water intrusion. Directing water away from the foundation helps relieve pressure on basement walls and prevents moisture from entering the structure.
Many homes in the Quad Cities benefit from improvements such as exterior drainage systems, downspout extensions, and proper grading to ensure water flows away from the foundation.
Behncke Construction has decades of experience addressing drainage and basement moisture problems in older homes throughout the Davenport area.

Our experience with foundation repair, masonry, and drainage systems allows us to identify the source of basement water problems and recommend practical solutions not unaffordable "basement systems".
If you are experiencing water intrusion or moisture problems in your basement, our team can inspect the issue and provide recommendations to help protect your home.
